Story

Omar walked into the room where his grandmother was sitting. She looked up and smiled.

Omar remembered something his teacher had taught him.

He stood nicely and said, “Assalamu Alaikum.”

His grandmother’s face lit up. “Wa Alaikum Assalam,” she replied.

Omar smiled. It felt nice to greet someone with peace.

His grandmother opened her arms and gave him a hug. “That was beautiful,” she said.

Later, Omar saw his uncle and said it again: “Assalamu Alaikum.”

Then he said it when he came to class. Each time, people smiled back.

Omar began to understand that salam is a kind way to begin.

That evening, he whispered proudly, “I say salam.”
